January's Jumpin' Calendar at the Black Stilt

JANUARY 15, 2009: PATRICK LANE

Considered the greatest poet of his generation, Patrick Lane has won about every prize available to poets, including the Governor General's award for poetry. His lastest book, a novel, Red Dog, Red Dog was the winner of the Butler Book Prize. His memoir, There is a Season was the winner of the BC Award for Canadian Non-fiction. His work has been published internationally.

He has been a great influence on many poets who have gone on to become accomplished poets, through the poetry retreats he has been holding since 1997.


JANUARY 22, 2009: SHERI-D WILSON & BILLEH NICKERSON

SHERI-D WILSON, Canada's finest spoken word artist, prize winning poet, artistic director of the Calgary International Spoken Work Festival and director of the Spoken Word Program at the Banff Centre, Sheri-D Wison is an inspiriting poet and teacher. She will be holding a workshop on Saturday, January 23, from 1-5 in Victoria. Contact Isa Milman, imilman@shaw.ca to register.

BILLEH NICKERSON, past editor of Event and Prism, founding member of the performance troupe, "Haiku Night in Canada", writer in residence at Queen's University in 2008, will be reading from his latest book, McPoems. He currently is teaching in Toronto.

JANUARY 29, 2009: DOUGLAS SMITH & RHONDA GANZ

DOUGLAS SMITH, has 15 books of poetry, was nominated for the Governor General's Award, was the winner of The Malahat Review Long Poem Prize and teaches at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

RHONDA GANZ, poet and graphic designer, has had one of her poems recently accepted for display on buses in Vancouver for Poetry in Transit. She is a regular reader at The Black Stilt, and has been a finalist in The Malahat Review's Fare Horizons Poetry Contest. She was a featured poet in the Times Colonist Solstice Poetry series.
