NOVEMBER 6, 2009: GLENAIRLEY POETS AND NANCY HOLMES

GLENAIRLEY POETS launch their chapbooks: A Cello Never Found Me and Tears. The Same Music from Leaf Press. Patrick Lane has led 20 poetry retreats over the past 12 years and some of the regions best poets have taken part. They will be reading from the chapbooks , which contain poems written at the November 2008 and the March 2009 retreats.

NANCY HOLMES has four collections of poetry, her latest being The Adultery Poems and Mandorla, both from Ronsdale Press. She is the head of the Creative Writing Department at UBC Okanagan and is the editor of
Open Wide the Wilderness: Canadian Nature Poems.

NOVEMBER 13. 2009: RHONA MCADAM & WENDY DONAWA

RHONA MCADAM has published five books of poetry, the latest is Cartography from Oolichan Books. She recently spent a year in Italy at the Slow Foods University of Gastronomic Sciences, learning everything about food except how to cook it. She now makes a partial living from food writing. Her new collection will be called
Earth's Kitchen.

WENDY DONAWA has lived an island life: early years on Vancouver Island; then three decades in Barbados. She returned to Victoria to complete her Ph.D. Her poems have appeared in Canadian and Caribbean literary journals, and in The Glenairley Chapbooks. She won first prize for poetry in the Victoria Writers' Society 2009 competition. She will be launching her chapbook from Rubicon Press,
Sliding toward the equinox.

NOVEMBER 20, 2009: WENDY MORTON

WENDY MORTON launches her 5th book of poetry What Were Their Dreams? Valleys of Hope and Pain: Canada's History from Black Moss Press. She was commissioned by the Alberni Valley Museum to write poems from archival photos and journals in celebration of the province's 150th anniversary. As well, she listened to the stories of the residents of the valley, including survivors of residential schools and turned their stories into poems. All of the poems are on archival photos in the book. CBC's Jo-Ann Roberts will be the host. Music will be provided by Patrick Godfrey.

NOVEMBER 27, 2009, KIM GOLDBERG

KIM GOLDBERG is an award-winning poet, journalist and author of six books. She has lived in Nanaimo over 30 years. Her latest book, The Red Zone, takes its title from the "Red Zone", a 40 block area of the city core where homeless people are barred. She has spent the last three years verse-mapping and photographing Nanaimo's back alleys, graffiti galleries, underpasses and homeless encampments. She reconstructs a landscape of cultural decay through a stunning combination of poem, image, artist projects and journal entries until the city itself becomes a person speaking to us.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
